{"id":428,"date":"2010-04-25T10:01:02","date_gmt":"2010-04-25T15:01:02","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.apluscompsci.com\/blog\/?p=428"},"modified":"2010-04-25T10:04:37","modified_gmt":"2010-04-25T15:04:37","slug":"start-the-cs-major-track-early","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.apluscompsci.com\/blog\/start-the-cs-major-track-early\/","title":{"rendered":"Starting the Comp Sci Career Track Early"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.internaldrive.com\/2010\/04\/23\/the-drive-to-pursue-a-computer-science-degree-begins-in-3rd-grade\/\">The Drive Starts in 3rd Grade or Earlier<\/a><\/p>\n<p>This is a great article.<\/p>\n<p>I had my now 8 year old start working with Scratch when he was 6.\u00a0 He can now do some amazing things with it.\u00a0 My 6 year old has now started writing programs in Scratch as well.\u00a0 It is fun to see the two of them collaborate on blend their ideas.<br \/>\nI have stepped up my work and have gone in and taught my older son&#8217;s 2nd and now 3rd grade classes how to program in Scratch.I have been amazed with how quickly the kids have picked it up and what they have been able to do.<br \/>\nI have taught them basic Animation, looping, decision making, variables, and broadcasting.\u00a0 They are doing some fairly advanced stuff to only be 8 and 9.<br \/>\nI used some of the materials I developed for use at the middle and high school and they had no trouble with it.<br \/>\nI plan to go back in a few weeks and teach a few more lessons as many of the kids are working at home with Scratch and have been writing games and such for fun.<br \/>\nI think I have planted the seed with this group that Computer Science is not hard and that it is really fun and COOL!<br \/>\nI will post some updates later on as things change.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Drive Starts in 3rd Grade or Earlier This is a great article.
