How do you get teams ready to compete?

TCEA Presentation on Getting Teams Ready to Compete

Over the last 10 years, I have tried various methods to help teams prepare for contests.   The one that I have found that works best is the simple practice makes perfect approach.

Throughout the year, I teach my students the basics of contests.   We go over common types of problems that you see and how to solve each type in the most efficient way.

Once the students have the basics down and know how to solve a contest problem in an efficient way, I put them into teams that I feel will work best.   I do not let them pick any old team they want.   I take into consideration who can do what and form the teams that I feel will work best.

After the teams are formed, we meet after school and run practice contests about once a month.  I give each team a pack and I serve as judge.   This gives each team immediate feedback and they learn very quickly how a contest actually works.
